OpenAI has announced a brand-new tool called Sora 2, a progressive AI video generator. This comes almost a year after the first version of Sora was presented. Along with it, OpenAI has also launched a new social media app that works a lot like TikTok. The different thing is that every video on this app is made with Sora 2’s AI.
What is Sora 2?
Sora 2 is an artificial intelligence model that can make videos look very real. Unlike the older version, this one can also create audio, so videos now have both images and sound. OpenAI says Sora 2 is a big step forward, just like when GPT-3.5 changed the game for text.
In a demo, Sora 2 showed a gymnast flipping on a balance beam, and the movements looked almost real. This shows that the AI is much better at handling complex actions and physics without making odd mistakes.
What Makes Sora 2 Special?

The New Social App
Sora 2 is available only through a new app called Sora for iOS. Right now, this app is only for people in the US and Canada, and you can join only if you get an invite. The app looks like TikTok or Instagram Reels, but the main difference is that every single video is AI-generated.
Users can:
- Upload a video of themselves.
- Ask the AI to place them in changed settings (for example, a beach or a fantasy world).
- Share the videos with friends who can watch, like, remark, and share.
There is also a feature called Cameo. With it, you can take someone from another video and use AI to make a new video with them. This makes it feel like creating digital types of your friends, though OpenAI warns that protections are important.
Safety and Identity
Before you can make a video of yourself, the app asks you to verify your identity. This is to stop people from misusing the app with celebrity clips. However, the Cameo feature makes things a bit tricky, as it still allows some playful copying of friends.
The Future of AI Videos
OpenAI is not alone in this idea. Meta also launched its own AI short-video feature called Vibe Feed last week. Still, Sora 2 stands out because of how real and smooth the videos look.
With Sora 2, AI videos are becoming a new way of communication—just like we once moved from text to emojis, and then to voice notes.
