BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), India’s government-owned telecom business, has introduced a new feature called VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi). This feature helps users make and receive phone calls using a Wi-Fi network, even if their mobile network signal is weak. While other private businesses like Jio and Airtel already had this service, BSNL has now caught up and brought it to its customers.

Along with this, BSNL has also launched 4G services in Mumbai and is expanding its digital services across India.

    What is VoWiFi?

VoWiFi means calling through Wi-Fi. If your phone has poor network but you are connected to Wi-Fi, your calls will still work. For example, if you are inside a basement or a place with no mobile net, you can still talk on the phone using your Wi-Fi connection.

The good part is that VoWiFi calls are regular calls, so you don’t need excellent apps to use it.

    Where is it Available?

On October 2, during BSNL’s silver jubilee celebrations, DoT Secretary Neeraj Mittal announced the soft presentation of VoWiFi in West and South Zone circles. This means users in these areas can start using the new feature.

At the same time, BSNL launched its 4G services in Mumbai and started rolling out eSIM services across India.

    More About eSIM and 4G

    • eSIM: BSNL is working with Tata Communications to bring eSIM services. eSIM is a digital SIM inside your phone, so you don’t need a physical SIM card.
    • 4G Expansion: BSNL already launched 4G in Delhi in August and is now carrying it to more cities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also recently inaugurated BSNL’s indigenous 4G network in Odisha.

    Extra Services for Users

BSNL has signed an agreement with the Department of Posts (DoP). Now, BSNL SIM cards and mobile recharges will also be obtainable in 1.65 lakh post offices across the country. This will make it easier for people in rural and urban areas to access BSNL’s services.

    Why is This Important?

BSNL is trying to modernize its network and give customers the same features that private telecom businesses already offer. With VoWiFi, 4G, and eSIM services, BSNL users can now enjoy improved call quality, faster internet, and more convenience.
