    When you prepare for a government exam, it is very significant to know the exam pattern and syllabus. Just like before a cricket game, players study the rules and practice, students also need to know what subjects and topics will come in the exam.

    Let’s understand the Prelims (first exam) and Mains (second exam) in very simple words.

    What are Prelims and Mains?

    • Prelims Exam (First Step) →This is the entry-level exam. If you pass this, you can sit for the Mains exam.
    • Mains Exam (Second Step) →This is the main exam. If you pass this, you move to the interview or final stage.

    So, think of Prelims as an exercise match and Mains as the final match.

    Exam Pattern – Prelims

    The Preliminary Exam is usually online and has objective questions (MCQs with 4 options).

    Subjects in Prelims:

    • English Language (basic grammar, vocabulary, comprehension)
    • Reasoning Ability (puzzles, patterns, coding, logical questions)
    • Quantitative Aptitude (Maths) (numbers, simplification, percentages, profit & loss)

    Time Perimeter: Around 1 hour
    Questions: Around 100
    Marks: Around 100

    Note: There is negative marking. If you answer wrong, marks will be cut.

    Exam Pattern – Mains

    The Mains Exam is tougher than Prelims. It checks your deeper knowledge.

    Subjects in Mains:

    • Reasoning & Computer Aptitude
    • General/Financial Awareness (current affairs, banking, economy)
    • English Language (reading, grammar, descriptive writing)
    • Data Analysis & Interpretation (Maths)

    Some exams also have a Descriptive Paper where you write essays or letters.

    Time Perimeter: Around 2–3 hours
    Questions: Around 150–200
    Marks: Around 200

    • Start with Prelims topics first, then move to Mains.
