Big Decision on Online Gaming – Supreme Court to Hear the Case

online gaming ban

What Happened?

The Government of India has made a new law – Raise and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025.
According to this law, all online games that include money transactions are banned.

This means you can no longer play online games where you put in real currency.

Why is the Case in the Supreme Court?

Many gaming companies were not happy with this law.
They challenged it in High Courts

  • Madhya Pradesh High Court
  • Karnataka High Court
  • Delhi High Court

Now, the Government needs all these cases to be heard together in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court agreed and said the hearing will be on 8 September.

What Happened in High Courts?

  • Madhya Pradesh High Court refused to stop the new rule.
  • Delhi High Court also received a similar request.
  • Karnataka High Court said the law will stay in force.

That’s why now all cases will be shifted to the Supreme Court.

What is the Government’s Stand?

The government says –

  • Games like Dream11, RummyCulture, My11Circle, MPL use real currency.
  • This promotes betting and money laundering.
  • Research has shown that these games make people addicted, like gambling habits.

So, the government has allowed only e-sports and casual games without money to continue.

Impact on the Industry

As soon as the law came, gaming companies faced problems –

  • Big firms like Games24x7, MPL, Baazi Games started cutting jobs.
  • Rumors say this law may put over 200,000 jobs at risk.
  • More than 400 businesses could be affected.

What Companies Say

Gaming companies argue –

  • This law is against the Constitution.
  • The government should stop or change it.
  • At least, companies should get a notice period before application.

But the government says it has followed all legal rules while making this law and is ready to face any test.

What Could Happen?

Now, everything depends on the Supreme Court.

  • If the Supreme Court supports the Government money-based games will stay banned forever.
  • If the Supreme Court supports businesses the law may get changed or relaxed.

In Simple Words

  • Government: “Money games = Betting. Ban them.”
  • Firms: “This is our business. Let us continue.”
  • Supreme Court: “We will decide who is right.”

All eyes are on 8 September’s hearing, which will decide the future of online gaming in India.
